OUR STORY

THIS IS US

The story of Mayer Winery began on the southern slopes of the Villány wine region, when our grandparents purchased their first vineyards in the renowned Kopár vineyard. In the early years, cultivation was carried out on just two hectares as a traditional family estate, where grape growing and winemaking formed a natural part of everyday life.

Over the years, the estate gradually expanded and today covers approximately ten hectares across some of Villány’s outstanding vineyard sites. Our winery is built on classic Villány red grape varieties, cultivated through professional knowledge passed down across generations and guided by deep respect for the terroir.

Mayer Winery remains a family-owned estate, where tradition and modern winemaking coexist in harmony. Our wines aim to authentically express the character of Villány, the uniqueness of each vineyard, and the spirit of our family heritage.

As the winery developed, hospitality and the presentation of local wine culture also became an essential part of our identity, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the philosophy behind every bottle.

PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy is rooted in family values and generations of professional experience. For us, winemaking is not simply a profession, but a heritage that shapes every decision from vineyard to bottle.

We believe that true quality comes from personal dedication, careful manual work, and respect for nature. Each of our wines reflects authenticity, continuity, and commitment to the spirit of the Villány wine region.

Our winemaking approach is based on balancing traditional craftsmanship with modern cellar technology. Hand harvesting, gentle grape processing, and precise technological control together ensure that our wines preserve the pure character of both grape and terroir.

Villány

Villány is Hungary’s southernmost wine region, where continental and Mediterranean climatic influences create exceptional conditions for premium grape cultivation. The warm southern slopes, mild winters, and long autumn season are particularly favourable for red varieties.

Most vineyards are located on loess-based brown forest soils with excellent water retention capacity, contributing to the richness, structure, and ripe fruit character of the wines.

Our winery focuses on the region’s traditional grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékoportó, Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc and Merlot form the backbone of our wines. Each variety is vinified using techniques adapted to best express its own identity.

The Villány wine region operates under one of Hungary’s strictest appellation systems. It has been awarded the Districtus Hungaricus Controllatus classification, representing the country’s highest category of origin protection.

This system guarantees strict vineyard delimitation, regulated grape varieties, and controlled viticultural and winemaking practices, ensuring that every bottle authentically reflects the identity of Villány.

The flagship wine of the region is Villányi Franc, the premium expression of Cabernet Franc, now regarded as one of Villány’s most important ambassadors of quality on the international stage.
